Kenya’s President Ruto Faces Growing Challenges Amid Protests and Youth Discontent

“This generation has no memory of past authoritarian regimes,” says Macharia Munene, a professor at the United States International University in Nairobi. “They’ve learned how to ask questions.”

The public’s disillusionment reached a boiling point following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody, sparking deadly protests in late June. The government’s forceful response has not only led to loss of life but also triggered a broader erosion of investor confidence. According to a survey by Stanbic Bank Kenya, business expectations fell to the second-lowest level on record in May, signaling growing concerns about the country’s economic stability.

“Continued protests and the government’s reliance on force over dialogue will undermine investor confidence,” warned Jervin Naidoo from Oxford Economics.

Despite the mounting dissatisfaction, Ruto is unlikely to be removed from power soon. His large parliamentary majority ensures his position is secure for now, and the opposition remains weak and fractured, unable to present a viable challenger. Ruto also succeeded in neutralizing his primary political rival, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, by bringing him into the government.

For Ruto, the coming years will be crucial in determining whether he can calm the unrest and secure a second term. His administration is banking on increased social spending, youth-focused programs, and a more favorable economic outlook to regain public trust. However, political commentator Javas Bigambo warns that the president must address the growing perception among young people that the government is indifferent to their struggles.

“The government is perceived as blind, deaf, and dumb by the youth,” said Bigambo. “If Ruto continues to handle the protests with contempt, it will only worsen his chances of re-election.”

Ruto’s ability to bridge the divide between his administration and the younger generation will be vital in the run-up to the 2027 election. The next few years could determine whether he is remembered as a leader who failed to address the concerns of his citizens or one who adapted and regained their trust.
