US and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as Gulf Tensions Rise

The United States has struck Iranian military targets following weekend operations in the Gulf. The strikes mark a fresh escalation in hostilities between both sides amid fragile ceasefire talks.

Negotiations are still ongoing despite repeated exchanges of fire.

Iran said it responded by targeting a US military base in the region. The Revolutionary Guard said the action was carried out in retaliation for US strikes.

It said the move was directed at sites linked to American operations.

US Central Command said its strikes followed what it described as hostile Iranian activity. It said Iranian forces shot down a US MQ-1 drone over international waters.

The incident triggered what it called a defensive response.

Centcom said US fighter jets destroyed Iranian air defence systems during the operation. It said a ground control station was also hit. It added that two one-way attack drones were neutralised.

Iran did not confirm the exact base it claimed to have targeted. It said the strike was aimed at a facility connected to operations in southern Iran. Details of the location were not provided.

Air defence systems in Kuwait intercepted missiles and drones during the exchange.

State media reported sirens across several areas during the incident. Authorities did not immediately give further details.

The confrontation comes despite ongoing efforts to sustain a ceasefire framework agreed earlier in the year.

Both sides have continued to trade strikes in recent months. Diplomatic channels remain open but fragile.

The escalation has raised concerns over security around the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a key route for global oil shipments. Disruptions continue to affect energy markets.

The wider conflict involving US and Israeli operations against Iran-linked targets has continued since February.

It has resulted in heavy casualties and growing regional instability. Energy prices have also been affected globally.

US officials say preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons remains a core objective.

Donald Trump has also faced domestic pressure over rising fuel costs ahead of elections. The issue remains politically sensitive in Washington.

Talks continue over sanctions relief and frozen Iranian oil revenues held abroad.

Both sides remain divided on key conditions for a lasting agreement. No breakthrough has been announced.

Israeli military operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah continue alongside the Iran-related conflict.

US officials say discussions are ongoing on possible de-escalation frameworks across the region. The situation remains volatile across multiple fronts.
