Diplomatic tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia escalated over the weekend following allegations of a security incident during the African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa.
Somali authorities claimed that Ethiopian security forces attempted to block President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from accessing the summit venue. The incident comes amid existing tensions between the two countries over a disputed maritime pact.
Describing the alleged actions as “outrageous conduct,” Mogadishu called for a full investigation by the AU, which is headquartered in Addis Ababa.
However, Ethiopia refuted the claims, asserting that President Mohamud was warmly welcomed at the summit. Ethiopian officials stated that the Somali delegation was denied entry to a venue due to their security detail’s attempt to bring weapons inside.
The conflicting narratives have further strained relations between Somalia and Ethiopia, highlighting the delicate nature of regional dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
The AU summit, which brings together leaders from across the continent to discuss key issues and priorities, serves as a platform for diplomatic engagement and cooperation. However, incidents such as this underscore the challenges inherent in maintaining diplomatic relations among member states.
As tensions persist, both Somalia and Ethiopia are likely to engage in diplomatic efforts to address the incident and prevent further escalation.
The AU has yet to release an official statement regarding the alleged security incident, but the matter is expected to feature prominently in discussions among member states in the coming days.
