France has joined 25 other countries in banning TikTok in its Pacific territory of New Caledonia, following violent protests and unrest.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced the ban after declaring a state of emergency for at least 12 days, aimed at restoring order amid the turmoil that has resulted in four deaths and over 100 arrests since Monday.
The unrest, sparked by controversial voting changes imposed by Paris, has injured more than 300 people. The French government has deployed 500 police officers and troops to the territory, closed the international airport, and imposed a curfew to control the situation. Authorities have been granted enhanced powers to enforce travel bans, conduct searches, and detain individuals threatening public order.
