Activist Deji Adeyanju Challenges BBNaija Organisers Over Winners’ Prizes

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has stirred controversy after questioning whether winners of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show actually receive the prize money announced by organisers.

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Adeyanju claimed that many of the show’s past winners appeared financially worse off after their time in the spotlight.

“Do they really give BBNaija winners the prize money? I’m asking because many of them end up looking extremely broke
afterwards,” he wrote.

His post came just a day after Imisi was declared winner of the 10th edition of Big Brother Naija, walking away with a grand prize of ₦150 million.

The comment drew widespread reactions from fans and social media users — some agreed with his observation, while others challenged him to name specific ex-housemates who became poorer. The activist, however, did not elaborate further.

Observers have also recalled that Phyna, who won the 2022 edition, publicly accused the show’s organisers of failing to deliver parts of her prize package, fuelling speculation that Adeyanju’s post might have been inspired by her past complaints.

Big Brother Naija, first aired in 2006, has become one of the most influential reality TV franchises in Africa, producing several celebrities and brand influencers. Each season promises millions of naira in cash and sponsorship deals to the winner, often marketed as a ticket to financial transformation.

However, not all winners have managed to sustain their fame or wealth after leaving the show. Some fade from public attention, struggle with brand management, or mismanage their newfound fortune.

Industry analysts suggest that while the prize money is real, the long-term financial success of each winner depends on personal discipline, business sense, and post-show strategy.

Adeyanju’s remarks have reopened a broader conversation about accountability in entertainment reality shows and whether Big Brother Naija truly delivers lasting empowerment to its winners — or simply momentary fame that fades as quickly as the show’s spotlight.
