As President Hakainde Hichilema stood before the National Assembly today, he faced a nation riddled with concern. Zambia is grappling with the soaring prices of the most basic of commodities – mealie meal. The promise of change, which propelled Hichilema into power against all odds in 2021, now hinges on his ability to deliver on this critical issue. While trust in his leadership remains strong, the patience of the people is wearing thin, and the time for swift action is now.

Hichilema’s inauguration was a moment of hope, a testament to the enduring spirit of Zambian democracy. The nation rallied behind him, inspired by his vision of unity, economic progress, and the eradication of corruption. Yet, as the months have passed, the reality of high mealie meal prices has continued to gnaw at the hopes of those who believed in him.

The President acknowledges the problem and has promised to address it, but the pace of progress is dishearteningly slow. The affordability of mealie meal is not just an economic issue; it is a matter of survival for many Zambians. Families are forced to make agonizing choices between putting food on the table and meeting other essential needs.

While the fight against corruption and the pursuit of economic development are undoubtedly important, the urgency of the mealie meal crisis cannot be overstated. This staple food is the lifeline of the nation, and its inaccessibility threatens the very fabric of society. To truly fulfill the expectations that brought him into power, President Hichilema must prioritize the plight of ordinary Zambians who are struggling to feed their families.

The trust people have in Hichilema’s leadership is a valuable asset, one that should not be squandered. To regain the momentum of hope and change that swept him into office, Hichilema must act decisively. This means not only addressing the symptoms of high mealie meal prices but also delving into the root causes, such as production costs, supply chain inefficiencies, and market dynamics.

Furthermore, the President should engage with key stakeholders in the agriculture and food distribution sectors to craft innovative solutions. Ensuring fair pricing, reducing reliance on imports, and investing in domestic production are steps that can lead to a sustainable solution. Additionally, a robust system of monitoring and regulating food prices is essential to prevent exploitation and ensure that affordable mealie meal reaches every Zambian.

All and above, the time for rhetoric has passed, and the people’s patience is wearing thin. President Hichilema must seize this moment to prove that he is not just a leader of promises but one of actions. Affordable mealie meal is a symbol of his commitment to the well-being of all Zambians. To honor the trust that brought him to power and to secure the prosperity of the nation, he must act swiftly and decisively to make mealie meal truly affordable for every Zambian. The clock is ticking, and the people are watching.
