Indonesia Blocks Musk’s Grok After AI Tool Creates Fake Sexual Images
Indonesia has suspended access to Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot owned by Elon Musk, following public outrage over its use in creating fake sexual images of people without their consent.
The decision was taken after reports revealed that Grok’s image-generation feature could be prompted to alter photos of women and children into sexualised versions.
The images, created through simple text commands, sparked anger from parents, digital safety groups and human rights advocates.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs said the move was necessary to protect citizens from the dangers of AI-generated fake content.
The minister, Meutya Hafid, said the government would not tolerate the misuse of technology to violate people’s dignity and privacy. She described non-consensual deepfake images as a serious threat to public safety in the digital space.
“This action is to protect women, children and the wider public from the growing risks of fake pornographic content created with artificial intelligence,” the ministry said.
Indonesia is the first country to fully block Grok. In other countries, the company behind the chatbot, xAI, has restricted access to the image tool to paid users after facing heavy criticism.
The controversy has triggered reactions around the world. In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the abuse of AI technology was unacceptable and that all options, including a possible ban, were being considered.
In the United States, Senator Ted Cruz warned that such images violate existing laws meant to protect victims from online exploitation.
Despite the suspension, journalists in Jakarta reported that Grok’s account on X was still active and responding to messages in Bahasa Indonesia.
The incident has renewed global debate over the need for stronger laws to control artificial intelligence and prevent its use for harassment, exploitation and digital abuse.
