A Federal High Court in Jos, Nigeria, has sentenced four Chinese nationals to five years in prison for engaging in illegal mining operations. The convicted individuals—Liang Quin Yong, Wang Huajie, Zhong Jiajing, and Long Kechong—were charged with unlawfully purchasing mineral resources.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which prosecuted the case, confirmed that the men were arrested in March at a mining site operated by JLM Mining Company on the outskirts of Jos, Plateau State. The arrests were based on what the EFCC described as “credible intelligence.”
All four individuals pleaded guilty to the charges. The court found them guilty beyond reasonable doubt and ruled that, in addition to their prison terms, they would each have the option of paying a fine of one million naira (around $650).
The court also imposed financial penalties and asset forfeitures. A total of 134.8 million naira (approximately $84,000), identified as proceeds from the illegal mining activity, was ordered forfeited to the government. Furthermore, they were fined 16 million naira (about $10,000) for failing to report financial transactions as required by law.
Following the completion of their prison sentences or the payment of fines, the court directed that the four Chinese nationals be deported and permanently banned from entering Nigeria.
This case highlights the growing challenge of illegal mining in Nigeria, a country rich in untapped mineral resources. While Chinese companies have become increasingly active in the sector, concerns remain over their compliance with local laws and regulations. Nigerian authorities continue to crack down on such activities as part of broader efforts to reform and regulate the mining sector.
