Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been reappointed for a second term as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), effective September 1, 2025. The decision, announced on November 29, 2024, received unanimous approval from the WTO General Council, reflecting global confidence in her leadership.
Since becoming the first African and woman to lead the WTO in 2021, Okonjo-Iweala has navigated challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Her leadership has focused on issues like vaccine equity, sustainable trade, and amplifying the voices of developing nations.
On her reappointment, Okonjo-Iweala said, “I am honored and excited by the opportunity to continue leading the WTO in its important work of fostering a more inclusive and resilient global trading system.” Looking ahead, she emphasized her focus on adapting the WTO to new global trade dynamics, including climate change and digital trade, stating, “My focus will be on strengthening the WTO’s ability to respond to the rapidly changing dynamics of global trade.”
Her reappointment signifies continued confidence in her leadership, with an emphasis on inclusivity and addressing pressing global challenges.
