Otti Signals Neutral Stance on Tinubu’s 2027 Bid, Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has indicated he will not stand in opposition to any re-election bid by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, even as he maintains his position within the Labour Party.
Speaking during the March edition of his monthly media engagement, “Governor Otti Speaks,” held at the Government House in Umuahia, the governor said his position is guided by political propriety, noting that he is also likely to seek a second term in office.
According to him, it would be inconsistent to challenge the president’s ambition while pursuing his own re-election.
Otti also dismissed any speculation about a possible defection, stressing that he remains committed to the Labour Party and its core principles.
He pointed to recent internal disputes within the party, which he said have now been resolved following a ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria and subsequent compliance by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He explained that the party has since regained stability, with fresh membership registration ongoing and preparations underway for congresses and a national convention.
On security, the governor announced the appointment of retired Colonel Chidi Kalu Ukoha as Homeland Security Manager, describing the move as part of broader efforts to strengthen internal security structures and lay a foundation for the eventual establishment of state policing.
Otti further urged caution against linking criminal activities to specific ethnic or regional groups, emphasizing that crime should be treated as an individual act rather than attributed to any community.
He noted that offenders can often be found within local populations and warned that profiling could deepen divisions rather than solve security challenges.
His comments come amid growing political alignments and early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and key stakeholders gradually clarifying their stance on potential alliances and contests.
