Russia plans to host 500,000 African students, including Nigerians, in its universities as part of a broader educational and diplomatic engagement strategy.
Currently, 2,000 Nigerian students study in Russia, with 220 awarded scholarships for the 2025 academic year, which will cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs. Russia aims to foster long-term partnerships with Nigeria in energy, metallurgy, and industry through education.
The scholarships are part of Russia’s efforts to increase its educational ties with Nigeria, with President Vladimir Putin setting a target to raise the number of international students in Russia to 500,000 in the long term.
This move comes after Nigeria suspended government-funded transport and accommodation for students on foreign scholarships, prompting Russia to introduce a separate grant system. Russia also proposes project-based training to encourage students to return to Nigeria after completing their studies
