South Africa Hopes for Nigeria’s Help to Keep 2026 World Cup Dream Alive
Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup now depend partly on Nigeria, following a disappointing goalless draw with Zimbabwe on Friday.
With South Africa sitting two points behind Group C leaders Benin, they must beat Rwanda in their final qualifier on Tuesday and hope Nigeria defeat Benin by at least three goals.
A win for both South Africa and Nigeria would see Bafana Bafana finish top of the group and book their place at the World Cup.
Coach Hugo Broos admitted that qualification is no longer entirely in their hands but insisted that his players must believe in the possibility of a “little miracle.”
He noted that while the situation is tough, South Africa still has a chance if results go their way.
Broos also pointed out that Nigeria’s determination to qualify could work in Bafana’s favor since the Super Eagles also need a win to stay in the race.
For South Africa, the equation is simple they must beat Rwanda and hope Nigeria overcomes Benin. If both results go their way, Bafana will advance to the 2026 World Cup.
However, a draw or loss in either game could end their campaign. Broos urged his team to focus on their own match first, saying, “We must play to win and believe until the final whi
stle.”
