TODAY IN HISTORY – 8th Dec, 2025 – Africa World News

By Valentine Uchechukwu Ndukwu.

There is no today without the deliberate decisions we made in the past and the same thing applies to the illusionary future we talk about.

The future cannot be without the deliberate lessons we gather from the past to make careful decisions today.

Today in History stands at the gate of history to respectfully commandeer us to learn from the past.

Take a look at some remarkably engaging events that were;

On this day in 1660, a woman (either Margaret Hughes or Anne Marshall) appeared on an English public stage for the first time, in the role of Desdemona in a production of Shakespeare’s play Othello.

Sadly on this day in 1863, between two and three thousand churchgoers died during the Church of the Company Fire. Deemed as probably the largest single building fire by number of victims in modern history, it began at the start of a Mass held at the Church of the Society of Jesus in Santiago, Chile, during the celebration of the recently proclaimed Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Still on this day in 1933, anarchist insurrection broke out in Zaragoza, Spain.

According to Today in History, on this day in 1990, and in 1992, the Galileo spacecraft flew past Earth for the first and second time.

Regrettably on this day in 1998, eighty-one people were killed by armed groups in Algeria.

According to Today in History, on this day in 2013, Metallica performed a show in Antarctica, making them the first musical act to perform on all seven continents.

It was on this day in 2019 that the world recorded the first ever confirmed case of COVID-19 in China.

Remarkable in Malawi, today happens to be the earliest day on which National Tree Planting Day can fall, while December 14 is the latest; celebrated on the second Monday in December.

Amazingly in Ethiopia, today is Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day.
