On Friday, President Donald Trump announced the creation of a task force to help plan for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will be held across North America. This move comes as ongoing tensions over tariffs have caused strain between the U.S. and its neighbors.
Trump expressed his belief that the tensions surrounding the event would add to the excitement, saying, “I think it’s going to make it more exciting,” and adding, “Tension’s a good thing.”
The task force will focus on ensuring security and smooth logistics for the tournament, which will attract millions of visitors to the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“We are honored to have this opportunity for our country,” Trump remarked after meeting with FIFA officials about the World Cup.
As preparations intensify, tensions persist over Trump’s trade policies. His frequent threats to impose tariffs have sparked fears of a trade war, unsettling markets and complicating relations with neighboring countries.
Trump has also openly criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and joked about the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state.
The 2026 World Cup will feature an expanded 48 teams, with 78 of the 104 matches taking place in the United States, and 13 games each scheduled in Canada and Mexico.
