The International Festival of Carthage in Tunisia has decided to cancel the performance of French singer Hélène Ségara, which was set for July 31, after pressure from activists over her support for Israel. The concert was part of the festival’s 59th edition, running from July 19 to August 21.
Tunisian activists launched a campaign on social media urging the festival’s administration to withdraw the concert, arguing that Ségara’s support for Israel conflicted with Tunisia’s stance on Palestine. They believed that allowing the performance would be seen as endorsing the normalization of ties with Israel under the guise of cultural exchange.
In response, the festival organizers issued a statement confirming the cancellation and reaffirmed their dedication to supporting the Palestinian cause. The administration emphasized Tunisia’s long-standing position in favor of Palestinian independence and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. They also underscored their commitment to showcasing performances that reflect the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.
This decision comes amid a backdrop of escalating violence in Gaza, where Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of nearly 57,700 Palestinians since October 2023, with most victims being women and children. The ongoing bombings have caused severe food shortages and a public health crisis in the region.
Israel is also facing international scrutiny for its actions. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in connection with war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, a case for genocide has been filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
