A recent United Nations report forecasts worsening acute food insecurity in 18 “hotspots,” including Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Malawi.

Urgent aid is needed to prevent famine in Gaza and Sudan and to address severe hunger crises in Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan. The report identifies new hotspots such as the Central African Republic, Lebanon, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zambia. It highlights that conflict, climate extremes, and economic shocks are exacerbating food crises.

The impacts of El Niño and the potential threat of La Niña are also expected to worsen the situation. Despite high humanitarian funding levels, 2023 might see a decrease in aid compared to the previous year. FAO Director-General QU Dongyu stressed the importance of proactive measures to save lives and reduce food shortages.
