US and Iran Reach Tenuous Two-Week Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions
A fragile pause in hostilities has been announced between the United States and Iran, with both sides agreeing to a conditional two-week ceasefire aimed at de-escalating the recent surge in regional tensions.
Donald Trump stated the truce would take effect under specific conditions, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would halt fighting only if attacks against Iran stop immediately.
Iranian officials have also outlined additional terms, including compensation, as part of a broader 10-point ceasefire framework.
The announcement came just before a looming deadline from Washington, heightening the sense of urgency around the agreement. Pakistan, which has been mediating talks, invited both sides to Islamabad for further negotiations to stabilize the situation.
However, the ceasefire’s scope is limited. Israel clarified it does not apply to Lebanon, despite earlier statements suggesting otherwise. Evacuation warnings have been issued in parts of southern Lebanon, underscoring the continued volatility in the region.
Despite Iran projecting confidence in public statements, analysts note the country remains under significant pressure. Global oil markets reacted sharply to the news, with prices dropping as fears of supply disruptions eased.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is traveling to the Gulf to support efforts aimed at sustaining the ceasefire and preventing a return to full-scale conflict.
