US Grants $32.5m To World Food Programme For Nigeria
The United States has announced a grant of $32.5 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen food and nutrition assistance for vulnerable populations in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the US Embassy in Abuja said the funding will support communities in the North-East and North-West affected by conflict. The aid is aimed at internally displaced persons, with a focus on women and children.
The contribution will allow WFP to reach more than 764,000 people with food and nutrition support. This includes providing electronic food vouchers, as well as supplementary nutrition for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and 43,235 children.
The latest support follows an earlier announcement in August, when Washington committed $93 million in emergency food aid to 13 countries, including Nigeria, to address hunger and malnutrition.
According to the US State Department, the global initiative will supply therapeutic food for close to one million children suffering from severe malnutrition, in addition to essential food items and logistical support.
