President Donald Trump has ordered preparations for the Guantanamo Bay facility to house up to 30,000 deported immigrants.
During an event signing the Laken Riley Act, which strengthens immigration laws, Trump confirmed that the site, once used for military prisoners, will now detain immigrants facing deportation. He emphasized the facility’s role in holding individuals accused of violent crimes or theft, even before conviction.
This controversial decision, backed by many Republicans, has drawn concern from immigrant rights groups over potential mass detentions for minor offenses. “We’re going to send them out to Guantanamo,” Trump stated, referring to those deemed the “worst criminal illegal aliens.”
