ADF Rebels Attack Catholic Church in Eastern DRC, Killing Over 21

An overnight assault by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on a Catholic church compound in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has left at least 21 people dead, according to local sources.

The attack took place around 1 a.m. on July 27 in the town of Komanda, located in the troubled Ituri province. Witnesses reported that heavily armed militants stormed the church premises, opening fire on worshippers and nearby residents. Several homes and shops were also set on fire during the raid.

“More than 21 bodies have been recovered so far — some inside the church, others outside. At least three of the victims were found burned beyond recognition, and the search is still ongoing,” said Dieudonné Duranthabo, a civil society coordinator in Komanda.

The Congolese military confirmed the incident, with a spokesperson stating that at least 10 people were killed, though the full toll may be higher as rescue and recovery teams continue their work.

The ADF, a rebel group with roots in Uganda and known for its brutal attacks, has been responsible for repeated violence in the eastern regions of the DRC, often targeting civilians and religious institutions. The United Nations and regional forces have struggled to contain the group’s spread in recent years.

Authorities have launched an investigation and pledged to step up.
