Hichilema’s Visit to Harare Signals Renewed Zimbabwe–Zambia Cooperation

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has arrived in Harare for the first-ever Zimbabwe–Zambia Bi-National Commission, marking his first official visit to Zimbabwe since becoming president in 2021.

The trip is attracting attention because Hichilema previously skipped President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 2023 inauguration, a move widely seen as a sign of strained relations.

Analysts say this new visit suggests both leaders are ready to reset ties after years of political tension linked to Hichilema’s uneasy relationship with former Zambian president Edgar Lungu and the ongoing dispute over Lungu’s remains in South Africa.

Hichilema’s visit comes at a time when he is facing increasing pressure at home over Zambia’s struggling economy, high debt, and rising unemployment.

Commentators believe that strengthening regional relationships including recent visits to Tanzania and now Zimbabwe could help him build diplomatic stability ahead of Zambia’s 2026 general elections.

Despite past disagreements, both countries appear to recognise the importance of cooperation, especially as political and economic challenges mount across the region.

The Bi-National Commission, co-chaired by both presidents, aims to boost collaboration in key sectors such as energy, trade, mining, infrastructure, and security. During the meeting,

Mnangagwa praised the visit as a historic step in deepening ties, highlighting the shared history and cultural bonds between the two nations.

He also emphasised the need for joint efforts to tackle modern threats like terrorism, drug trafficking, and cybercrime.

With major projects like the Lion’s Den–Kafue Railway already in progress, both leaders urged their governments to work faster and more effectively to strengthen partnership and drive development for citizens on both sides of the border.
