Ghana’s World Cup winner retires
Ghanaian footballer Daniel Opare has officially retired from professional football at the age of 35.

The former FC Porto, Real Madrid Castilla and Beşiktaş right-back brought an end to a long and respected career that took him across top leagues and several countries.
Opare is best remembered for helping Ghana make history in 2009 when the Black Satellites became the first African team to win the FIFA U20 World Cup. He later earned 20 caps for the senior national team, the Black Stars.
In his retirement message, Opare expressed deep gratitude to God, saying his journey was only possible through divine grace.

He thanked his family, friends and supporters for standing by him through difficult moments, especially during periods of injury when he almost considered giving up.
Opare also showed appreciation to the clubs he played for and their fans, saying their trust helped him grow and stay committed throughout his playing years.

Opare, who featured for Ghana in the 2008 and 2012 Afcon tournaments and the 2014 World Cup, has been without a club since leaving Belgium’s RFC Seraing in 2023.
Despite the challenges, he said he wore every jersey with pride and no regrets.

As he steps away from football, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, loyalty and professionalism.
