African Union Condemns Mali Attacks, Reaffirms Support for Security Forces Amid Rising Violence
The African Union has strongly condemned the recent wave of attacks in Mali, warning that such violence places civilian lives at serious risk as the country continues to grapple with insecurity.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in a statement released on Saturday, described the attacks as unacceptable and expressed deep concern over their impact on ordinary citizens.
He stressed that the violence could expose already vulnerable populations to further harm.
Youssouf also reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to peace, stability, and regional security, extending solidarity to both the people of Mali and the country’s security forces as they respond to ongoing threats.
The condemnation comes in the wake of coordinated assaults reportedly carried out by armed groups in parts of Mali, including the capital Bamako and several other regions.
The Malian military confirmed clashes with what it described as “terrorist groups,” noting that security operations were launched to regain control of affected areas.
According to the army, the situation has since been brought under control, with significant losses recorded on the side of the attackers.
Despite this, reports indicate that unrest also spread to northern cities such as Gao and Kidal, as well as Sevare in the central region.
Authorities say security forces remain on alert as efforts continue to stabilise the country and prevent further escalation of violence.
