Albania Appoints AI System as First-Ever Minister
Albania has made history by becoming the first country to officially appoint an Artificial Intelligence system to a ministerial post, a move that has drawn international attention to the role of emerging technologies in governance.
The AI, named Diella, is not a human officeholder but a sophisticated program developed to supervise the nation’s artificial intelligence policies.
Its portfolio covers areas such as setting ethical standards for AI deployment, advancing innovation, and coordinating the integration of AI into public services and decision-making.
Government officials say the appointment signals Albania’s determination to modernise its institutions and adapt to a world increasingly shaped by digital systems.
By assigning Diella a seat in government, Albania hopes to streamline the regulation of AI, while also positioning itself as a pioneer in technology-driven governance.
Analysts note that the decision could inspire other nations to consider similar steps as they confront the growing influence of artificial intelligence in economic, social, and security spheres.
However, the development has also raised questions about accountability, transparency, and the limits of AI in exercising roles traditionally reserved for elected or appointed human leaders.
The bold experiment is expected to be closely watched by policymakers, researchers, and technology companies around the world as debates continue over the balance between human oversight and machine intelligence in public administration.
