A devastating flash flood struck Dharali, a town in Uttarakhand, India, on Tuesday, resulting in at least four confirmed deaths and approximately 100 people reported missing.
The torrent of mud and debris, triggered by a sudden cloudburst, tore through the narrow mountain valley, demolishing buildings and engulfing entire structures, including multi-storey apartments. The floodwaters moved with such force that they uprooted homes, leaving the area in chaos.
Rescue efforts are underway with the deployment of 150 army troops who have already rescued around 20 survivors from the freezing sludge. Search teams continue to work tirelessly in hopes of locating any stranded individuals.
The mud in some areas has reached depths of up to 50 feet, making the search difficult and dangerous. The Indian government has mobilized all available resources to support the rescue operation and provide assistance to affected residents.
Experts and climate activists have pointed to this event as a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change on the region. The heavy rainfall, which reached up to 21 cm in some parts of the state, is part of the unpredictable weather patterns exacerbated by global warming.
With the monsoon season already prone to deadly floods and landslides, the tragedy has drawn attention to the role of urbanization and environmental mismanagement in worsening the region’s vulnerability to such natural disasters.
