Footage Triggers Uproar After Doctor Is Seen Attacking Patient in Hospital Ward
What began as a routine hospital visit quickly spiralled into a disturbing incident that has since sparked outrage and demands for accountability.
A video circulating online shows an Indian doctor allegedly attacking a patient who was lying helplessly on his hospital bed, not after a provocation, but following a simple plea to be treated with basic respect.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, northern India. The patient, identified as Arjun Panwar, had visited the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties and undergoing medical tests.
According to Mr Panwar, the situation escalated when the doctor began addressing him in a rude and dismissive manner. When he calmly asked that the doctor speak to him respectfully, the exchange took an unexpected and violent turn.
Mr Panwar said he had just undergone a bronchoscopy and was struggling to breathe when he requested oxygen. Instead of assistance, he claimed the doctor questioned why he had been admitted, triggering a tense argument.
“I only asked him to speak to me properly,” the patient recounted. “When I asked if he spoke to his family the same way, he accused me of getting personal, and then he started hitting me.”
Footage of the alleged assault, which has since gone viral, shows the patient still on the hospital bed as the confrontation unfolded, drawing widespread condemnation online and offline.
Following the incident, a large crowd reportedly gathered at the hospital premises, demanding immediate action against the doctor involved.
Reacting to the public outcry, the management of IGMC Shimla confirmed that a three-member inquiry committee has been set up to investigate the matter.
The hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr Rahul Rao, stated that the committee’s findings would be submitted shortly. He also confirmed that a police report has been filed in connection with the incident.
As investigations continue, the video has reignited conversations around patient rights, professional conduct, and accountability within healthcare institutions.
