Special forces that seized power on Sunday after capturing Republican President Alpha Conde, have pronounced a countrywide curfew “until further notice”.
Led by Mamadou Doumbouya, coup leaders have dissolved Parliament in addition to suspending the constitution as military runs the show.
In a televised statement, the junta also disclosed that it would hold a meeting with President Conde’s cabinet ministers at 1100 GMT on Monday in the capital Conakry.
Guinean special forces ousted Conde who successfully ran for a controversial third term in office after manipulating the poor west african country’s constitution. in a coup on Sunday, arresting the president and imposing an indefinite curfew in the poor west African country.
Local media said the 83-year old president was toppled because of political tension, selective application of the law and widespread government corruption.
A uniformed soldier surrounded by other officers toting riffles said in a now gone viral video that parliament and government had been dissolved adding that Guinea’s land and air borders had been shut:
“We have decided, after having taken the president, to dissolve the constitution.”
The junta has further warned against defying the imposed nationwide curfew:
“Any refusal to attend will be considered a rebellion.”
