Iran Threatens Retaliation After US Seizes Ship as Ceasefire and Talks Collapse

Tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz after US forces take control of an Iranian-linked vessel, putting fragile peace efforts at risk.

A fresh wave of tension has emerged between Iran and the United States after American forces seized a cargo vessel linked to Iran, triggering strong warnings from Tehran and casting serious doubt on ongoing peace efforts.

US President Donald Trump said American Marines boarded and took control of the ship after it allegedly tried to bypass a naval restriction on Iranian maritime activity.

The interception reportedly took place near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

Iran quickly condemned the move, describing it as illegal and provocative. Officials in Tehran warned that the country will respond, raising fears of a possible escalation if tensions continue to rise.

The incident comes at a sensitive time, just days after both sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire meant to reduce hostilities following weeks of confrontation. That fragile agreement now appears to be breaking down.

Tehran has also signalled that it has no intention of joining new diplomatic talks, accusing Washington of acting in bad faith and worsening the situation through military pressure.

The crisis is tied to increased US naval restrictions targeting vessels linked to Iran, part of broader pressure over long-standing disputes including nuclear concerns and regional influence.

Iran has rejected the measures, calling them an act of aggression. In response, it has strengthened its presence around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large share of global oil supply passes.

The latest ship seizure marks one of the most serious flashpoints yet, with fears that any further confrontation at sea could affect global oil flow and raise international prices.

With both countries hardening their positions, hopes for renewed dialogue are fading fast. Iran insists talks cannot continue under pressure, while the US says enforcement actions will continue if its conditions are not met.

For now, the ceasefire appears increasingly unstable, with no clear path back to negotiations.
