LASEMA responds to multiple emergencies in 6 days, reaffirms readiness

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it successfully responded to nine emergency incidents across the state between April 20 and April 25.

The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the incidents, which ranged from fire outbreaks to road crashes and rescue operations, underscored the agency’s 24-hour operational readiness in line with the THEMES+ Agenda of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He said among the incidents was a fire outbreak at the NDLEA office, First Rainbow, Oshodi, on April 20, caused by sparks from welding activities on containers.

“The prompt response of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire Service and the Nigeria Police Force prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining properties. No casualties were recorded,” he said.

The permanent secretary also said that on April 22, the agency averted a potential explosion when a fully loaded PMS tanker caught fire along Majidun Road.

According to him, the fire was confined to the truck’s cab and extinguished before it could reach the tank compartment.

He added that LASEMA also contained a waste fire involving scrap electrical materials at Owode Onirin Market on April 23, with no damage to surrounding properties.

Oke-Osanyintolu further said that emergency responders rescued a man hit by a moving train at Cappa Bus Stop on April 24.

“The victim was stabilised at the scene by paramedics and taken to a trauma centre for further treatment,” he said.

He said the agency also secured a 45,000-litre fuel tanker that developed a leak along Ifako-Ogudu the same day, following a mechanical failure.

The LASEMA boss, however, disclosed that a fatal road accident occurred on April 25 on the Third Mainland Bridge, involving a Honda car and a stationary PSP truck.

“Two occupants of the car were trapped and later confirmed dead. Their bodies were recovered and handed over to the police, while the vehicles were cleared to prevent secondary accidents,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that search operations were ongoing for a man who reportedly jumped into the lagoon at Admiralty Way, Lekki.

He said LASEMA’s marine unit, in collaboration with LASWA officials and local divers, was conducting the search.

He also confirmed the death of a four-year-old girl who fell into an uncovered well in Bariga.

“The child was recovered during a joint operation with the Lagos State Fire Service. We sympathise with the family and urge residents to properly secure open wells and similar hazards,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu commended all emergency responders for their professionalism and effective inter-agency collaboration.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to proactive disaster management and urged residents to prioritise safety at all times.

“While we remain committed to prompt emergency response, prevention is key. Residents should insure lives and property, avoid reckless driving, ensure proper waste disposal and secure hazardous structures.
“Emergencies should be reported via 767 or 112,” he said.
