Opens Up on Love, Divorce and Life After Heartbreak
Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has spoken candidly about her views on marriage, describing the institution as something she no longer places on a pedestal.
The 42-year-old actress said while she is not opposed to getting married again, it is not something she is actively seeking. According to her, personal growth and peace now matter more than societal expectations.
Jegede shared her thoughts during a recent interview on Naija FM in Lagos, where she explained that her experiences have taught her to approach relationships differently.
“I’m open to remarriage if it happens, but I’m not chasing it,” she said. “I’ve also learnt never to say never.”
The actress argued that marriage often comes with pressures that many couples are not prepared for, noting that long-term relationships sometimes crumble shortly after a wedding.
“People can date for 10 or 15 years, get married, and within two or three years, everything falls apart,” she said.
“You begin to wonder if adding the marriage label is whatever introduced the problems. Once that tag comes in, intolerance sometimes follows.”
Jegede added that genuine companionship should take priority over titles, suggesting that some couples thrive better without the formal structure of marriage.
“It’s better to find someone you truly love and build a life together, even if it means cohabiting,” she stated.
The actress’ comments come years after her short-lived marriage to fellow actor Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole, which ended in 2019, less than a year after it began.
At the time, Jegede cited financial imbalance and a lack of mutual respect as key factors behind the separation. In previous interviews, she revealed that she was the major provider in the marriage and later regretted prioritising emotional attachment over financial stability.
Since then, the actress has remained vocal about relationships, women’s independence and the realities behind public perceptions of marriage.
