The Abia State Government has confirmed its first case of monkeypox, as disclosed by Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a State Executive Council meeting. Out of 13 suspected cases, one has tested positive, while nine others returned negative results. The positive case was identified in Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area.
Dr. Ngozi Azodo, the Special Adviser on Health, highlighted the state’s collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Environment, and Public Utilities to tackle infectious diseases. A steering committee has been established to support these efforts, aligning with the Federal Government’s “One-Health” policy.
Azodo also announced plans to renovate and upgrade 200 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state within 100 days, starting in September, with delivery expected by December as a “Christmas gift” to the people of Abia. Citizens are urged to maintain good hygiene, minimize contact with animals, and avoid individuals with suspected cases of monkeypox.
