On Monday, July 8, 2025, more than 70 members of a vigilante group were killed when bandits launched a deadly ambush in the Kukawa and Bunyun communities of Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria.
Aliyu Baffa, Chairman of the Kukawa vigilante group, confirmed the attack, revealing that his team, along with other vigilante units from Wase Local Government Area, was en route to locate bandit hideouts when they were intercepted by a heavily armed group of attackers.
Baffa described the ambush as a devastating surprise. The bandits, equipped with advanced weaponry, opened fire immediately, overwhelming the vigilantes and killing over 70 of them on the spot. While the remains of the deceased were laid to rest by evening, Baffa expressed concern that more bodies might still be scattered in nearby forests. He also noted that several members were still unaccounted for.
“The clash took place just one kilometer from Kukawa, near Madam Forest, an area that straddles the borders of Bauchi and Taraba states,” Baffa stated. “We’ve buried more than 70 in Kukawa alone, but the true number may be higher as the bandits’ firepower was too much for our men to handle.”
Musa Ibrahim, a resident of Bunyun village, also reported that 10 vigilantes were killed in his community, and numerous homes were burned to the ground by the attackers.
The attack underscores the growing insecurity in Nigeria, where vigilante groups are increasingly taking on the role of defending local communities against criminal elements, often at great cost. The continued escalation of such violent ambushes has raised alarm over the country’s ability to contain the growing threat posed by armed bandits and insurgents.
