In a message read at the premiere of Proyecto Ugaz, a theatrical production in Lima, Pope Leo XIV urged the Catholic Church to foster a culture that actively prevents and rejects all forms of abuse—whether spiritual, sexual, or institutional.
“It is necessary to radicate throughout the Church a culture of prevention that does not tolerate any form of abuse,” the Pope stated, emphasizing that the Church’s response must be structural, not rhetorical. “Prevention and care are not just pastoral strategies—they are the heart of the Gospel.”
The production honours investigative journalist Paola Ugaz, known for uncovering abuses committed by the now-disbanded Sodalitium Christianae Vitae. Pope Leo called the play “an act of justice,” adding that it gives voice to “a long-silenced pain.”
The Sodalitium was formally suppressed in April 2025 following years of investigation into abuse and financial misconduct. Ugaz, who co-authored a 2015 exposé on the group, has faced ongoing harassment and legal pressure since.
The Pope praised the courage of Ugaz and other journalists, writing, “The victims of the former spiritual family of the Sodalitium, along with the journalists who supported them with courage, patience, and commitment to the truth, reflect the wounded yet hopeful face of the Church.”
He defended press freedom as a pillar of justice and democracy: “Wherever a journalist is silenced, the democratic soul of a nation is weakened.” Referring to his meeting with Ugaz and fellow journalists shortly after his election in May, he recalled her gift of a traditional Andean scarf, calling the moment a sign of shared commitment to truth.
The Pope also acknowledged broader damage caused by the Sodalitium, including financial harm to communities like Catacaos and Castilla. He urged Peruvian civil society to protect those who tell difficult truths, no matter their platform: “From community radio stations to national media, all deserve protection.”
He ended with a message to all Peruvian journalists: “Do not be afraid. Be sowers of light in the shadows. Let your work build peace, unity, and dialogue.” He expressed his hope for a Church that welcomes truth, refuses silence, and walks with those who suffer.
