Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany during World War II.
The ceasefire will begin at midnight on May 8 and last through May 11, aligning with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. The Kremlin described the move as a humanitarian gesture, honoring the historic triumph that remains a cornerstone of Russian national identity.
“We call on Ukraine to honor this sacred memory and cease hostilities during this period,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement. “However, any provocations or violations will be met with a swift and decisive military response.”
The announcement has captured global attention, with diplomats cautiously welcoming the pause in fighting but remaining skeptical about its broader implications for peace talks. Fighting has raged for more than three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, causing tens of thousands of casualties and displacing millions.
Ukrainian officials have yet to formally respond to Russia’s ceasefire proposal. Previous temporary halts in fighting have largely failed to hold, with each side accusing the other of violations.
The move comes amid mounting international pressure for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts. Observers say while the gesture may ease hostilities briefly, it does not signal a long-term political settlement unless accompanied by substantive negotiations.
Victory Day, marked annually on May 9, is one of Russia’s most significant national holidays, celebrating the Soviet role in defeating Nazi Germany. This year’s commemorations carry added symbolic weight amid heightened patriotic fervor and military tensions.
It remains unclear whether Ukrainian forces or their Western allies will view the ceasefire as a genuine overture or a tactical pause by Moscow.
The United Nations and several European governments have urged both sides to use the ceasefire window to pursue dialogue and avert further humanitarian catastrophe.
