Sudan is currently facing a devastating cholera outbreak, with at least 22 deaths and 354 confirmed cases, as confirmed by Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that cholera has claimed 78 lives and infected over 2,400 people this year alone. The disease, a fast-spreading infection causing severe dehydration, is exacerbated by Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which has destroyed infrastructure and crippled healthcare systems. The WHO spokesperson, Tarik Jašarević, noted, “Most of the detected cases were not vaccinated.”
The outbreak originated in the eastern province of Kassala and has spread to five provinces, leading to urgent vaccination efforts. This cholera crisis compounds the suffering in a country already reeling from a 16-month conflict and severe flooding, which has displaced over 10.7 million people.
