Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the newly appointed regional director-elect for Africa at the World Health Organization, has passed away during medical treatment in India. At the age of 55, Ndugulile was scheduled to begin his role in February 2025. Although the nature of his illness has not been revealed, plans for his repatriation and funeral are underway.
Prior to his WHO appointment, Ndugulile served as Tanzania’s health assistant minister and a member of parliament. His death has led to expressions of grief from Tanzanian officials and the WHO, with many remembering him for his humility and dedication to public service.
Dr. Ndugulile’s sudden passing is a profound loss to the African health sector, especially given his upcoming leadership role at the WHO. His commitment to improving health across the continent will be missed.
