History has always been a subtle reminder of what will become the very present we are proudly enjoying and the future we are arrogantly anticipating.

Today in History is the vehicle that shuttles along these paths informing and educating us.

On this day in 1642, Abel Tasman was the first recorded European to sight New Zealand.

Still on this day in 1949, the Knesset voted to move the capital of Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

According to Today in History 1960, while Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia visits Brazil, his Imperial Bodyguard seizes the capital and proclaims him deposed and his son, Crown Prince Asfa Wossen, Emperor.

Again, on this day in 1972, Apollo program: Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt began the third and final extra-vehicular activity (EVA) or “Moonwalk” of Apollo 17. To date they are the last humans to set foot on the Moon.

Interestingly, on this day in 1974, Malta became a republic within the Commonwealth of Nations.

Although late, today is the birthday of
Afeez Agoro Oladimeji who was born on the 13th day of December, in the year of our Lord, 1975. He was regarded as (one of) Nigeria’s tallest men; widely reported biographical sources list his birthdate as Dec 13.
