In a striking development, US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of deporting South African-born billionaire Elon Musk from the United States. This remark comes in the wake of Musk’s ongoing criticism of Trump’s flagship spending bill, which had initially received Musk’s backing but soon became a point of contention. Trump made these comments on Tuesday during a White House press conference, as reporters asked about the escalating tensions between the two. The president responded, “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”
This remark refers to Musk’s resignation from his role heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) earlier this year, a position he had accepted at Trump’s request. Musk’s departure from DOGE came after he became increasingly vocal about his disagreements with the administration’s policies, particularly in relation to electric vehicles and government spending on renewable energy initiatives. Trump’s decision to question Musk’s continued residence in the US highlights the growing rift between the two figures, once seen as allies in the realm of business and technology.
The friction between Musk and Trump appears to stem primarily from the latter’s spending bill, which has undergone significant revisions. Musk has been particularly vocal about the removal of provisions that supported electric vehicle (EV) initiatives, a cause that Musk has championed through his companies Tesla and SpaceX. “He’s losing his EV mandate. He’s very upset about things, but you know, Elon can lose a lot more than that,” Trump remarked during his response to questions about Musk’s criticism.
Musk’s discontent with the bill is not limited to the electric vehicle sector. He has also expressed frustration with what he perceives as a lack of focus on technological innovation and sustainability in the bill’s revised form. The dispute has now taken on a personal dimension, with Trump making it clear that Musk’s vocal opposition has consequences. The president’s suggestion of deportation underscores the severity of the fallout between the two, leaving the public to question whether this feud will escalate further.
