TUNISIA: Only Two Candidates Cleared to Challenge Tunisia’s President Amidst Power Consolidation Accusations

Tunisia’s electoral commission has approved just two candidates, including President Kais Saied, to run in the upcoming presidential election, despite a court ruling to reinstate three other candidates.

The commission stated, “the court had not officially communicated its ruling within the deadline,” justifying their decision. President Saied, who has been accused of consolidating power, previously suspended parliament and pushed through a new constitution.

Human Rights Watch reported that other potential candidates were excluded through prosecution and imprisonment, describing the exclusion as part of a broader pattern of “prosecution and imprisonment” to narrow the field.
