Princess Opeyemi Bright, a British-Nigerian political figure, has become the youngest person to hold a mayoral position in the United Kingdom after her inauguration as Mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
At 29, Bright’s appointment marks a significant step forward for youth involvement and representation within UK politics, as well as a proud moment for the Nigerian diaspora. Her election has been welcomed as a sign of growing diversity in public office.
In her acceptance remarks, Bright acknowledged the moment’s importance, saying:
“It’s truly by God’s grace. I’m honoured to serve my borough, and as a Nigerian, I intend to lead with dignity and purpose. I hope this moment motivates others to pursue leadership and serve their communities.”
Born and raised in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright began her political journey at 22 when she was elected as a councillor. She has since focused on community development, particularly youth programs, social inclusion, and access to economic opportunities.
Her historic swearing-in on May 16 was widely celebrated, underscoring the growing impact of Nigerians in UK public life. Bright also continues a family tradition of civic service. Her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, was Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a prominent minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Opeyemi Bright joins a rising group of Nigerians shaping political landscapes abroad, alongside figures like Kemi Badenoch, Chi Onwurah, Uzoma Asagwara, and Esther Agbaje.
