On February 19, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him a “modestly successful comedian” who manipulated the U.S. into spending $350 billion on a war that, in Trump’s view, was unnecessary and unwinnable.
Trump argued that the war’s costs were disproportionate, with the U.S. spending $200 billion more than Europe, which had guaranteed financial support for Ukraine. He also questioned the accountability of Ukraine’s leadership, pointing out that half of the U.S. aid sent to Ukraine was unaccounted for.
Trump added that Zelenskyy, who had no democratic mandate, failed his people, leading to unnecessary deaths and a shattered country. He further claimed that only his administration could have negotiated an end to the war with Russia.
