TODAY IN HISTORY – 10th June, 2026 – African World News

By Valentine Uchechukwu Ndukwu.

If the study of history doesn’t expose you to the mistakes made in the past, it will open you to good deeds orchestrated by those who mean well for posterity. (V. John Simeon)

Today in History sets the stage for a few noteworthy events that went down on this day in the distant past.

Kindly scroll up and enjoy the following updates;

On this day in 1886, Mount Tarawera in New Zealand erupted, killing 153 people and burying the famous Pink and White Terraces. Eruptions continue for three months creating a large, 17 km (11 mi) long fissure across the mountain peak

Still on this day in 1944, in baseball, 15-year-old Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds became the youngest player ever in a major-league game.

It was on this day in 1947 that Saab produced its first automobile.

According to Today in History, it was on this day in 1957 that John Diefenbaker led the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada to a stunning upset in the 1957 Canadian federal election, ending 22 years of Liberal Party government.

Regrettably in 1991, on this day, eleven-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard is kidnapped in South Lake Tahoe, California; she would remain a captive until 2009.

On this day in 2002, the first direct electronic communication experiment between the nervous systems of two humans is carried out by Kevin Warwick in the United Kingdom.

Sadly on this day in 2009, eighty-eight year-old James Wenneker von Brunn opened fire inside the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and fatally shoots Museum Special Police Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns. Other security guards returned fire, wounding von Brunn, who was apprehended.

Today in History shows that in 2018, on this day, the Opportunity rover sends its last message back to Earth. The mission was finally declared over on February 13, 2019.

Interestingly on this day in 1990, Miriam Makeba returned from Exile. Famed South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba, fondly known as “Mama Africa,” officially returned to South Africa on this day after spending 31 painful years in forced political exile.

Sadly for Nigerians and the rastafarians in 2018, Nigeria lost one of its greatest reggae music legends, Ras Kimono (Ukeleke Onwubuya), who passed away on this day at the age of 60. He was widely celebrated across the continent for using his politically charged “Under Pressure” roots-reggae style to advocate for the masses.

Today is World Art Nouveau Day.
