Woman Arrested for Allegedly Trying to Kill 12-Year-Old House Help
The Abia State Police Command has taken a 35-year-old woman into custody after she was accused of attempting to kill her 12-year-old domestic worker during an incident in Umuahia.
Police identified the suspect as Mrs. Nwoko Gift, an indigene of Ehime Mbano in Imo State, who resides at IBB Housing Estate in Umuahia.
The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media allegedly showing the woman attacking the young girl, identified as Miss Ebony Chimamanda, with a knife.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on July 5, 2026.
The suspect allegedly became enraged after the child failed to spread out clothes as instructed before she left for the market.
Investigators also revealed that the victim had allegedly endured repeated physical abuse and threats to her life while living with the suspect.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers attached to the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded to the scene, rescued the girl, arrested the suspect and recovered the knife believed to have been used during the attack.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Police said the suspect is expected to face a charge of attempted murder once investigations are concluded.
The command condemned all forms of violence against children and vulnerable persons, urging residents to promptly report cases of abuse to security agencies for immediate intervention.
