As Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr, Israeli military operations persisted in Gaza, coinciding with US President Joe Biden’s criticism of Israel’s actions in the ongoing conflict.
Despite over six months of warfare, Palestinians in Gaza observed Eid prayers amidst destruction, while the Al-Aqsa mosque in east Jerusalem became a site of mourning rather than celebration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue the offensive against Hamas and secure the release of hostages, emphasizing strikes on southern Gaza despite it housing displaced Palestinians.
Diplomatic efforts for peace and hostage negotiation are underway in Cairo involving the US, Egypt, and Qatar. President Biden expressed disapproval of Netanyahu’s aggressive approach, urging for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid access. The conflict, which erupted with Hamas’s attack in October, has resulted in civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with Israel facing criticism for its siege tactics. Despite recent aid deliveries, humanitarian groups stress the urgent need for further action to address food insecurity and humanitarian needs in Gaza.
