Council Chairman, Mr. Echezona Anazodo, gave the assurance during an inspection tour of the market, which is currently undergoing major renovations including the construction of 200 modern shops and new access roads.
Dispelling rumours of possible displacement, Anazodo stated, “We have no intention of evicting any of our petty traders after the renovations. Our goal is to ensure every existing trader is properly accommodated in a suitable shop.”
He emphasized the council’s broader goal of modernising the market to improve business operations, which includes the construction of motor parks, public conveniences, and clearing lock-up shops from the market frontage to enhance access and aesthetics.
Prominent industrialist and native of the area, Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chairman of Ibeto Group, joined Anazodo during the inspection. Ibeto urged traders to embrace the council’s development plans and pledged his support for the ongoing transformation.
Mr. Chukwudi Oranekwu, Chairman of the Agbedo Market Traders Association, also addressed the traders, reaffirming that none would lose their place in the market due to the upgrade. He assured the local government of the association’s full cooperation.
Beyond the market, Anazodo also inspected a bridge undergoing rehabilitation and, alongside Ibeto, commissioned a newly constructed culvert at Nnewichi designed to control flooding and improve local infrastructure.
