Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the N700,000 fee imposed by NAFDAC on shop owners at the Onitsha Head Bridge Market in Anambra State, Nigeria. He called for the immediate review and removal of the charges, describing them as unjust and harmful to already struggling traders.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had previously shut down the market, accusing it of being a major center for the distribution of fake pharmaceuticals in Nigeria and beyond. Though the market was reopened in April, traders were asked to meet strict conditions, including the payment of the hefty fee.
Obi expressed concern over the prolonged closure of not just the drug market but also surrounding businesses unrelated to the issue. He noted that many traders are already burdened by unpaid debts and the harsh economic climate.
Highlighting that over 7 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have collapsed in Nigeria in the last two years, Obi warned that additional financial burdens could push more businesses to shut down. He called the situation a form of economic sabotage.
He urged NAFDAC and other authorities to show empathy and adopt policies that support recovery and growth, rather than punish small business owners. According to Obi, compassion and economic sensitivity must guide government decisions to avoid worsening the country’s economic challenges.Attach
