Gender Activist Condemns Humiliating Treatment of Comfort Emmanson — Calls for Dignity, Due Process, and Gender-Sensitive Protocols in Aviation

As a gender rights activist and advocate for gender equality, I am deeply horrified and outraged by the recent violent incident involving Ms Comfort Emmanson, who was forcibly dragged out of an Ibom Air airplane on August 10, 2025 and subjected to physical assault. This degrading and inhumane treatment is unacceptable and must be met with swift justice.

While no one condones disruptive behavior in public spaces, including on aircraft, it is imperative that safety measures are executed within the bounds of law, dignity, and gender sensitivity. The physical dragging, public humiliation, and viral exposure of Ms. Emmanson’s ordeal represents a disturbing violation of her fundamental rights as enshrined in both Nigerian law and international human rights conventions.

No woman—or any individual—should ever endure such brutality, especially in a public space where safety and dignity should be guaranteed. The disturbing footage of this incident highlights not only a failure in security protocol but also a blatant disregard for women’s rights and bodily autonomy.

As the Executive Director of the Grassroot People and Gender Development Center, we demand the following:

1. A Thorough Investigation: Ibom Air and relevant authorities must conduct an immediate, transparent investigation into this incident, ensuring that all perpetrators are held accountable.
2. Due Processes Must Be Respected
   Disciplinary measures in the aviation industry must follow due process to maintain both public confidence and justice.
3. Gender-Sensitive Protocols Are Urgent Security and airline personnel must adopt gender-responsive approaches. In situations involving women, procedures should ensure the presence of female officers divers to reduce the risk of physical and psychological harm.
4. Continuous Staff Training: More resources should be invested in training local aviation staff to international standards and build their tolerance skills to handle difficult clients.
5. Institutional Accountability and Reform
   We commend the government’s intervention in securing Ms. Emmanson’s release and lifting the lifetime ban. However, systemic reforms are needed to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
6. Use of Gadgets and Social Media: There is an urgent need to ensure that the aviation team uses their personal gadget and their social media effectively to avoid jeopardizing the image of the nation. Grassroot People and Gender Development Center stands with all women who have faced abuse, humiliation, or discrimination in public settings. This case is a reminder that the fight for dignity and justice must be relentless — because an injury to one woman’s rights is an injury to us all.
