A violent clash broke out on the morning of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Balogun Market on Lagos Island, Nigeria, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident began when a middle-aged man of Igbo origin went behind the market to urinate. He was confronted by three men who questioned his actions. An argument ensued, leading to a physical altercation.
One of the men reportedly called a known local figure, who arrived at the scene and allegedly stabbed the Igbo man in the wrist. In retaliation, the injured man reportedly seized the knife and stabbed his attacker in the neck, chest, and hand. The man died at the scene.
The fatal stabbing triggered a wider confrontation between groups of Yoruba and Igbo traders in the market. Several individuals were injured during the chaos.
Police officers arrived shortly after the incident. The body of the deceased was removed from the scene, and the Igbo man alleged to have carried out the stabbing was arrested.
A trader at Balogun Market, who witnessed the events and spoke to Africaworldnews, on condition of anonymity, said the clash occurred directly in front of his shop. A Lagos resident, also speaking anonymously, noted that ethnic tensions between Yoruba and Igbo groups in the area have flared in the past, often over minor disagreements.
As of the time of this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not issued an official statement.
