Trump Accuses Israel’s President of Deception Over Netanyahu Pardon Claims
Donald Trump has taken aim at Isaac Herzog, accusing him of misleading him over an alleged commitment to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently facing corruption charges.
In remarks aired on Israel’s Channel 14, Trump claimed Herzog had assured him on multiple occasions that clemency would be granted to Netanyahu, only to backtrack later.
He described the Israeli president’s conduct as disappointing and questioned his leadership, suggesting the issue has become a distraction at a critical time for the country.
Trump further argued that the ongoing legal proceedings against Netanyahu are undermining national focus, particularly amid security concerns, insisting that attention should be directed toward more pressing matters.
The comments add to a series of criticisms Trump has made in recent weeks, where he has repeatedly faulted Herzog’s handling of the situation and accused him of politicizing the pardon debate.
Israeli officials, however, pushed back strongly against the claims. A senior government source maintained that Herzog never guaranteed a pardon and has consistently stated that any such decision would be handled strictly within the framework of the law.
Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, remains entangled in a prolonged legal battle over allegations involving the exchange of political favors for benefits from influential business figures and media executives.
The case has continued to stir political tensions within Israel, even as the country navigates broader security challenges.
