US Court Halts Planned Termination of Somali Immigrants’ Protected Status
A federal judge in Massachusetts has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals in the United States.
The ruling comes after advocates filed an emergency motion, warning that ending the status could expose over a thousand people to detention, deportation, and serious risks if returned to Somalia.
The judge emphasized that the suspension allows both sides to prepare arguments while protecting the legal rights of Somali immigrants, including work authorization and safeguards against deportation.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security argued that Somalia’s situation has improved, suggesting TPS is no longer necessary.
However, lawyers for the Somali community stressed that the order provides critical temporary protection for those who rely on it, even as broader legal challenges.
